With some leftover yarn from the knit seersucker diamond blanket pattern, I thought that I should put the yarn to good use by making a knit chunky bolero shrug pattern! It was one of the fastest projects I’ve ever worked up, since I was working with a big knitting needle set that I usually don’t reach for. But after finishing this easy bolero shrug, I knew I had to share it with you all here on the Yarnalina blog as a free pattern!
INSPIRATION & DESCRIPTION & PROCESS
After making the crochet summer bolero shrug, I knew I wanted to make a similar but knit version of a bolero shrug. And I’ve also been seeing an increasing trend of big chunky knit for summer wear, so I decided to make a one as a sleeve instead of a top like the crochet shrug pattern that I made. I wanted a project that works up fast, since I was also getting started on making some sweater patterns for the Winter season on the Yarnalina blog.
For this knit shrug, I wanted a timeless rib look and one that isn’t too hard to work with, especially since I was working with huge needles that didn’t fit the usual weight 4 yarn needle recommendations. It was super easy to whip up after deciding on the type of ribbing that I wanted for the shrug.
The pattern was simply two of the same sleeves sewn together to create the shrug, and it was so easy to create that I’m genuinely consider making more with different weights of yarn to feature on the Yarnalina blog. There are still an amount of summer patterns that are coming out on the Yarnalina blog, even though I know the Fall season is arriving.
REMEMBER TO SHARE THIS POST!
This is a super friendly beginner knit project that anyone who just started knitting could take this on with relative ease. Since the stitches are loose, the visual appearance is very forgiving in hiding all the mistakes. Since this ribbing stitch has a different start and ending for different rows, I myself had mistakes that I didn’t catch for a couple of rows.
You could also switch out the ribbing stitch for a 2×2 knit and pul rib if you’re just starting out your knitting journey. I would most likely be creating for holey sweaters or shrugs like this in the future fall, spring, or next summer season.
Note that you can always adjust the baggyness of this summer bolero shrug if you prefer a looser silhouette, but overall I’m super happy to bring this knit bolero shrug to you all on the Yarnalina blog today!

SO, if you haven’t already, subscribe to the Yarnalina Youtube channel for video tutorials on the newest patterns available on the blog! We are currently at 10.5k subscribers right now!
I’ve been aiming to start publishing videos once every two weeks on the Yarnalina Youtube channel and the blog. Since we were able to hit 10k subscribers before the end of 2023, I’ll definitely be trying to publish more patterns in order to hit the new goal of 15k subscribers at the end of 2023!
I’ve also been trying to retake some project photos for my previous projects, so stay tuned for an updated Etsy, Instagram, and maybe even tiktok! I’m also planning on working on some general crochet and knit entertainment videos, instead of pattern based tutorial videos, just to spice up the channel a little.
Though bigger projects like clothing delays the pace I publish patterns on the blog, I’m happy that all my projects receive a lot of love on the blog and Youtube channel <3
REMEMBER TO SHARE THIS POST TO YOUR FELLOW CROCHET FRIENDS!
A note that I always like to make, your yarn usage depends on how tight your stitches are or how loose they are, so you might end up using more or less yarn than I did. Or you picked another yarn to work with, then the yardage you’d need will no doubt be different. So always remember to use the gauge to make sure your project will fit the way you want it to.

Repeat for two sleeves.
Assembly
Fold each sleeve in half and sew it together depending on how loose you want your shrug to fall on your shoulders. I sewed my sleeves together at around 2/3 of the total length for both sleeves, then sewed the two sleeves by connecting them at the cast off edge.
CONCLUSION
Lastly, you’ve finished your knit chunky bolero shrug! Remember to pin this knit shrug pattern for later and share the post to all your fiber-loving friends!
