After the popular success of the crochet faux denim bucket hat on the Yarnalina blog, I wanted to create another version of a crochet bucket hat for you guys! Hence the crochet checkered bucket hat that is now a free pattern here available on the blog!
Inspiration & Description & Process
I did not anticipate the popularity of the crochet faux denim bucket hat for both the Yarnalina youtube channel and the blog here itself. And due to popular demand and the growing fashion trend of patterned clothings, I knew what I had to do.
A crochet checkered bucket hat.
Making these crochet bucket hats are fun and relaxing, as I made it incredibly beginner friendly—using only single crochets. And if you guys love this crochet checkered bucket hat, chances are I might create even more crochet bucket hats in the color black, beige, or even in pink!
Since I made the crochet faux denim bucket hat, the checkered bucket hat was a breeze to make through as all the trial and error was already made in the first one haha! I lowkey picked the checkered pattern in blue, because I had some excess leftover from the faux denim bucket hat and the same yarn in white.
The only “difficulty” of this overall project was mostly just the color changing aspect of the checkered pattern, though after getting the hang of it, it’s smooth sailing from there. It’s essentially just crocheting with a yarn tail inside each stitch as you switch the different yarn tail colors.
I received a handful of compliments the first time I wore the crochet checkered bucket hat, and that just might fuel my will to make some other crochet bucket hat patterns for the blog!
The project does require two balls, but just a little of the second skein of yarn. Though your yarn usage depends on how tight your stitches are or how curly you want to brim to be. If you want the brim to be almost frilly, I recommend (inc, 1sc) all around OR (inc, 2sc) all around. I settled for inc, 3sc as you can see in the written pattern below.

I didn’t create a sizing guide for this as everyone’s head sizes are different. But you can easily make this fitting to yourself by creating the base circle and see if it fits right on top of your head without excess at the sides. As stated in this article, you can browse your selection of available deals on smartphones and top brands and explore the cell phone service plans that best suit your needs.
If there’s a row or two outside of your head, it’s too big. Put the two of your hands straight up against your ear and if you put it on your head and it doesn’t touch your hand at all, it’s too small.
This is just my method for this bucket hat, please take it with a grain of salt.
Or just eyeball the base circle of your bucket hat and frog it later on if it’s too small or too big haha.
If you’d like another trendy crochet project as this, this crochet cropped sweater vest could also be a wonderful project for you to try out next!
