Ever since crochet tiktok has taken over the world by the storm with various forms of crochet–bees, frogs, or cardigans– and I’m all here for it! And I thought I would throw a full FREE written pattern of the recent popular cropped sweater vest (with sizes XS – 5XL!!!) to the mix!
Inspiration & Description & Process
In all honesty, I didn’t really know about the existence of cropped sweater vests until those crochet tiktoks brought it to my attention. And after asking Lion brand for yarn support, they were kind enough to supply me with these gorgeous LB Collection Superwash merino yarns! Soon after some thought, I settled on a crochet cropped sweater vest!
Since the clothing category on the Yarnalina blog is looking a little empty with only this cropped sweater, I thought that adding a cropped sweater vest to the category would be a wonderful addition!
In addition to the beginner friendly aspect of this crochet sweater vest, the color combo that could go with this cropped sweater vest pattern is truly endless! I could definitely imagine this crochet sweater vest in the color tan brown, coyote brown, dusty jade, and denim blue from the LB Collection Superwash merino yarn.
Nonetheless, I’m happy to report that I didn’t remake any body pieces for this crochet cropped sweater vest contrary to 90% of all my projects haha. Except the part where I had to change the length of the arm hole after sewing it together and trying it on. Regardless, I’m more than happy with the result of the sweater vest! 🙂

I can definitely see myself wearing this with maybe a thin long sleeve underneath or a collared t-shirt with some baggy high waisted jeans! Or even just with the cropped sweater vest itself with a pair of jeans or jean shorts plus a cardigan in a chilly weather or without it. There are plenty of outfit options to go with this crochet cropped sweater vest, and bonus since it’ll be handmade by yourself!
The crochet cropped sweater vest in a size small does require two balls, but just some of the second skein of gray yarn. Though your yarn usage depends on how tight your stitches are or how loose they are, but you can definitely use the leftover yarn to either create a more oversized look by increasing it by a size.
It was surprisingly easy to create this pattern (besides the writing portion of it for all the sizes) as it’s pretty intuitive with only half double crochets. There isn’t much variation to the sweater vest overall. With the same ribbing for both the sleeves and neck collar, as well as the half double crochets for the majority of both body panels. In conclusion, this crochet cropped sweater vest is definitely a great project for anyone to tackle!
Last but not least, if you’d like another tiktok crochet project as this, this crochet bucket hat could also be a wonderful project for you to tackle next!

Crochet Cropped Sweater Vest
Ribbing x 2
With your 4mm crochet hook, chain 10 (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50) in the color Tutu (pink).
Row 1: Working into the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc across <9, 14, 19, 24, 29, 34, 39, 44, 49>
Row 2 – Row 40 (45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80): Chain 2, turn your work, and blhdc across <9, 14, 19, 24, 29, 34, 39, 44, 49>
Change color to Ice (gray), then turn the ribbing lengthwise.
**After you have two ribbing pieces completed till this step, both panels are going to work up from here at this row. But both their design is going to different from the other.**
Front Panel
Row 1 to Row 15 (20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55): Chain 2, and hdc across <60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100>
*You could easily have different stitch counts while working lengthwise onto the ribbing as there are no specific stitch holes for you to crochet. The stitch count I’ve given you is an estimate based on how many stitches I had for my size small sweater vest. My front panel was 65 stitches and my back panel was 66 stitches.*
Change color to Tutu (pink).
Row 16 (21, 26, 31, 36, 41, 46, 51, 56) – Row 19 (24, 29, 34, 39, 44, 49, 54, 59): Chain 2, and hdc across <60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100>

Row 27 (32, 37, 42, 47, 52, 57, 62, 67): Chain 2, and hdc 27 (30, 32, 35, 37, 40, 42, 45, 47) <27, 30, 32, 35, 37, 40, 42, 45, 47>
Row 28 (33, 38, 43, 48, 53, 58, 63, 68): Chain 2, skip a stitch, and hdc across <26, 29, 31, 34, 36, 39, 41, 44, 46>

Repeat Row 28 (33, 38, 43, 48, 53, 58, 63, 68) and Row 29 (34, 39, 44, 49, 54, 59, 64, 69) for a total of 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28) rows counting from Row 27.
Cut your working yarn tail and tie it off. (Leave a slightly long tail to sew the shoulder seam of both panels together.)
Make a slip knot onto the other side of the front panel, then repeat Row 27 (32, 37, 42, 47, 52, 57, 62, 67) to the Repeating rows of 28 and 29.
Then cut your working tail and tie it off. (Leave a slightly long tail to sew the shoulder seam of both panels together.)
Back Panel
Row 1 to Row 37 (42, 47, 52, 57, 62, 67, 72, 77): Chain 2, and hdc across <60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100>
*You could easily have different stitch counts while working lengthwise onto the ribbing as there are no specific stitch holes for you to crochet. The stitch count I’ve given you is an estimate based on how many stitches I had for my size small crochet cropped sweater vest. My front panel was 65 stitches and my back panel was 66 stitches.*
**Whatever stitch count you have for your back panel, divide that by three and you’re going to work your two shoulder panels by 1/3 on the left and right. If it’s an odd number, put that extra stitch for the middle at the neck hole or take stitches from the neck hole to put into the two shoulder panel stitch count.**
Row 38 (43, 48, 53, 58, 63, 68, 73, 78) – Row 42 (47, 52, 57, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82): Chain 2, and hdc 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36) <20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36>
Leave a long yarn tail around 85cm (90cm, 95cm, 100cm, 105cm, 110cm, 115cm, 120cm, 125cm) // 33″ (35″, 37″, 39″, 41″, 43″, 45″, 47″, 49″) to later sew the front panel together with the back, cut the yarn tail, and tie it off.
Make a slip knot and loop it onto the other side of the back panel.
Repeat Row 38 (43, 48, 53, 58, 63, 68, 73, 78) – Row 42 (47, 52, 57, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82), and leaving a long tail as well as tying it off too.
Assembly
Sew the front and pack panels together: the two shoulder seams and the side body seams (while leaving a 13cm, 16cm, 19cm, 22cm, 25cm, 28cm, 31cm, 34cm, 37cm // 5″, 6″, 7″, 8″, 9″, 10″, 11″, 12″, 13″ arm hole on either side)
Sleeves x2
Using the color Tutu, loop a slip knot onto any stitch at the open arm hole, and chain 4 (6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20)
Row 1: Working into the second chain from the hook, hdc back, slip stitch 3 times onto arm hole <3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19>
Row 2: Blhdc across <3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19>
Row 3: Chain 2, blhdc across, slip stitch 3 times onto the arm hole <3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19>
Repeat Row 2 – Row 3 until Row 42 (47, 52, 57, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82).
*You could have one or two rows up or down the row count for the sleeves as you could have spaced your slip stitches wider than I had, so it’s perfectly normal*
Once you reach where you started on for the sleeves, slip stitch the beginning and end sleeve together, cut the yarn tail, tie it off, and weave in the ends. Then you would repeat this process again for the other arm hole.
Neck Collar
Using the color Tutu, loop a slip knot onto any stitch at the open arm hole, and chain 4 (6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20)
Row 1: Working into the second chain from the hook, hdc back, slip stitch 3 times onto neck hole <3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19>
Row 2: Blhdc across <3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19>
Row 3: Chain 2, blhdc across, slip stitch 3 times onto the arm hole <3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19>
Repeat Row 2 – Row 3 until Row 58 (63, 68, 73, 78, 83, 88, 93, 98).
*You could have one or two rows up or down the row count for the sleeves as you could have spaced your slip stitches wider than I had, so it’s perfectly normal*
Once you reach where you started for the neck collar, you can either slip stitch the collar (both the beginning and end) onto the 5 or 6 stitch gap or sew it on. (I sewed it on)
Slip stitch process: Slip stitch the collar onto the gap, cut the working yarn tail, tie it off, and weave in the ends.
Sewing process: Leave a longer yarn tail, cut the yarn, tie it off, thread the yarn needle, sew the collar onto the 5-6 stitch gap, tie a knot, weave in the ends, and cut it off.
Conclusion
