Since bucket hats became a trend recently, I wanted to make myself a crochet bucket hat! So the crochet faux denim bucket hat is now a free pattern here available on the blog!
Inspiration & Description & Process
Bucket hats are taking over the world in popularity. From sunflower granny square to strawberry to frog ones, I wanted to make a crochet bucket hat that matches with many of my rather neutral outfits. I love this bucket hat so much I’m even contemplating making it in black, beige, and even white! It’s easy and definitely a Netflix-able project with it’s simple design.
It didn’t come to be as it is now easily though.
The base circle of the hat was originally too curly due to too many stitches. While my mistake could be solved with a steamer, I don’t own one and neither was I planning to wait for one. I eventually decided on adding an extra row of single crochet per ever five increase rows to balance out the amount of stitches to create a flat circle.
And that solved my almost five hour long frustration of frogging it apart and redoing it because I thought something went wrong.
Nonetheless, I’m incredibly satisfied with my crochet bucket hat and I’ve already worn it out more than three times in the week that I finished it. Even my sister liked my crochet bucket hat!
The project does require two balls, but just a little of the second skein of yarn. Though your yarn usage depends on how tight your stitches are or how curly you want to brim to be. If you want the brim to be almost frilly, I recommend (inc, 1sc) all around OR (inc, 2sc) all around. I settled for inc, 3sc as you can see in the written pattern below.

I didn’t create a sizing guide for this as everyone’s head sizes are different. But you can easily make this fitting to yourself by creating the base circle and see if it fits right on top of your head without excess at the sides.
If there’s a row or two outside of your head, it’s too big. Put the two of your hands straight up against your ear and if you put it on your head and it doesn’t touch your hand at all, it’s too small.
This is just my method for this bucket hat, please take it with a grain of salt.
Or just eyeball the base circle of your bucket hat and frog it later on if it’s too small or too big haha.
